Professor Damien Walmsley

Professor Walmsley is Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham. He qualified in Manchester in 1981, and followed this with house jobs at Guys & St Bartholomew’s, before returning to Manchester on an MRC training fellowship. During this time he obtained his MSc and PhD. He joined the staff at Birmingham in 1985, becoming Senior Lecturer in 1991 and Professor of Restorative Dentistry in 2000.

Ultrasonics in Dentistry has become his major research area at Birmingham where he runs a successful research team which is funded by the major UK research councils and Dental Industry. He is head of the teaching unit of Prosthetic Dentistry and Higher Degrees Tutor. His interest in all things IT is at the cutting edge of teaching and learning in dentistry. He has published extensively in both the Scientific and popular Literature in the above areas. Positions of responsibility include the Peer Review Council of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Executive Board Member of the Association of Dental Education in Europe.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dentistry and on the Editorial board of the British Dental Journal, European Journal of Dental Education and the Brazilian Dental Journal. Published Books include Editor of “Restorative Dentistry” and joint Editor with Prof Y. Maeda of “Implant Dentistry with new generation magnetic attachments”.

Clinical interests include: Speciality interest is Restorative Dentistry with an emphasis on Removable Prosthodontics. Specialises in provision of precision retained overdentures using implants and natural tooth roots. Specialist experience in both studs and magnets for denture retention. Hobbies include mp3s, Sci-Fi, running, playing the guitar and Manchester City.
